We interviewed Daniel Evans a Graphic Designer from Perth, Western Australia to find out how using Hnry has given him peace of mind on his taxes.
Why are you a sole trader?
I’ve just moved to Perth. Being a sole trader works for me. It gives me flexibility and a degree of control over my business and the way I work.
And how did you hear about Hnry?
I was at dinner with a friend who works in the same industry as me. She’s a Hnry customer and she was explaining that it’s really easy to use, it’s convenient, it’s competitively priced, and that I should take a look. So I did.
How did you do your taxes before Hnry?
I used to get my tax done by one of those big cookie cutter accounting firms. I had no complaints about the quality of their work. I’d pay $200 and invariably I would get a $3,000 tax rebate. But then my partner and I set up a self-managed super fund. In doing so the businesses of managing our tax affairs became more complicated and our tax bills rose quite significantly. I wanted to see of there was a simpler way of doing things that could bring costs down and deal with all those complexities.
So it wasn’t a matter of you not being on top of your tax affairs?
No. I’m very disciplined with my money. I’m English and was brought up to understand that “if it’s not on t’ trolley then you can’t afford it”. I kept a big spreadsheet that I would plug everything into and it would automatically calculate my earnings and what I owed in tax. I would put the tax money in a separate bank account not to be touched until the end of the financial year. But I was intrigued to see if Hnry worked as well as my friend said it did. So I thought let’s sign up and give it a go.
What’s your experience of Hnry been like so far?
They’re very responsive. If I have a query they generally get back to me within 24 hours, if not within 24 minutes.
The main benefit of Hnry is peace of mind. Instead of me having to ringfence money in a separate account to be put away for tax time, Hnry does that for me. So the money that goes into my bank account is money I can spend.
How would you sum up Hnry?
It’s relatively simple to use. It’s clear, It’s laid out very well. The dashboard is good. The language they use on the site is conversational, it’s not boring. And it’s nice to know there’s a real accountant at the end of the chatbot. That takes some getting used to – you’re dealing with real people, not a pre-recorded response! So far I’m pleasantly surprised.
